he who insists on his own creativity has no memory

Did any of you hear of the whole Justin-Bieber-rips-off-Lola-bottle-for-his-lame-perfume story? If not, you should look it up because it's kind of hilarious. You may have also heard that when Marc Jacobs was asked about actions he planned to take, he said that he was not going to do anything about it, and quoted Chanel: "He who insists on his own creativity has no memory."
I certainly don't make a habit of talking shit about Coco and I do think it is a clever quote because a creative mind should not constantly be looking back, it should look forward, but it seems to me that the creative mind should have a memory. I think everyone must need to have inspiration at some point (no matter how tiny, or unrelated to what comes from it in the end), and to have inspiration, you need memory. Or is it possible to totally make something up in your mind? I don't know. What do you guys think of the quote? What do you guys think of my outfit? Kind of grunge, and could use some jewellery, but sometimes I can't be bothered. Replies to either question are appreciated ;)

    I think the quote means that if someone is going to copy someone and insist that it was his or her own creation then he or she must not remember from whence the original idea came. I think it was rather eloquent to respond thus, on the part of Chanel.

    I agree. What is, has been and is to come. There is nothing new under the sun. It even says it in Ecclesiastes. So I think its up to us, and our interpretation of what has been..right? And re-invent it with our own spin. Memory is a foundation to interpreting something to be new again..you add YOU to it..thats just my 2 bitz.
